What you need

Access: Free tier
API key: Bring your own
Runs on: VS Code · CLI
You’ll need: VS Code installed
Kilo Code account (sign-up)
Empty project folder
Own API key (optional, e.g. OpenRouter/Anthropic)
Skill level: Some setup — keys, settings, or a connected account

Worth knowing: Cheaper/free bundled models (e.g. MiniMax) noticeably slow down and degrade in quality as the context window fills; starting a fresh session helps.

Highlights

Transparent step-by-step debuggingDebug mode narrates its reasoning as it investigates a bug (e.g. inspecting a taskbar component) before making code changes, unlike a silent agent.
Orchestrator mode for parallel sub-tasksDispatches multiple sub-agents to tackle a larger task at once, similar to Claude Code's sub-agents but as a dedicated mode.
Bring-your-own model keyLets you plug in a third-party key (e.g. MiniMax, OpenRouter, Anthropic) instead of paying through Kilo Code's own billing.
Runs as CLI or VS Code extensionSame open-source agent can be driven from a terminal/virtual server session or from inside the VS Code sidebar.
Live token/cost tracking per taskShows tokens used and dollar cost in real time as the agent works, even on free models.
